O-ring groove in the deck of the block. Actually a piece of .035 stainless music wire gets pressed into the groove, which pushes into the copper head gasket as the head is tightened. The groove in the head is wider than that in the block, which allows the material being pushed up to flow into the head. This creates a very positive seal against both fluids and pressure.
